Made it to a 4star read for me. It started a bit slow and I wanted to put it aside but I stuck with it and ended up being happy about it.

What worked for me? First & Foremost Deuce – really good character and I loved her choices. I also enjoyed her seeing topside for the first time. Fade was another winner for me – what can I say, I like ‘em surly. They had a great friendship leading to romance chemistry. Together and apart they worked. "For Fans of The Hunger Games". That's the recommendation on the hardcover. And this is the statement I'll be using as the basis for my review.

Going into the book, you expect it to a fight-for-the-death-for-the-entertainment-of-others sort of situation. You expect the heroine to be rather unlikeable, much like Katniss. You expect there to be an overwhelming love triangle between Deuce, Fade, and, much later, Stalker, as there was in Katniss's mind over Peeta and Gale. You expect the people in En "For Fans of The Hunger Games". That's the recommendation on the hardcover. And this is the statement I'll be using as the basis for my review.

Going into the book, you expect it to a fight-for-the-death-for-the-entertainment-of-others sort of situation. You expect the heroine to be rather unlikeable, much like Katniss. You expect there to be an overwhelming love triangle between Deuce, Fade, and, much later, Stalker, as there was in Katniss's mind over Peeta and Gale. You expect the people in Enclave to be oppressed by their leaders.

About the only thing the two books have in common is something really bad happened to society as we know it and the survivors are doing their best to make things work. Oh, and the leaders of College Enclave are probably a bit dasterdly, much like the leaders of Panem. And, I suppose, the sheer struggle to survive by finding enough food each day. Yes, those are similarities between Aguirre's and Collins's work. The rest diverges spectacularly, and in great ways.

First: Deuce is likeable. We understand how she came to be strong, but she's not 100% Huntress. She's not 100% hard. She wants to protect her people from the threat of the Freaks. She wants to protect them from the lies the leaders have been telling. She has a mind of her own. She uses it. She questions the worldview in which she's been raised. She wants to know what happened Topside to have made the underground life she knows. And she casts herself out to protect those she loves. Aside from Katniss volunteering to keep Prim out of the arena, Katniss is nothing like Deuce.

Second: The action is not simply for sport/entertainment. The action is for survival against natural odds: Freaks--who must be the byproduct of biological warefare gone awry--in the tunnels and then Wolves later. Aside from the Freaks, the bad guys aren't rotten through-and-through. Hell no. They are merely the product of their enviroment. They have only known fighting as a means of survival, and it isn't until Deuce comes along (and a Freak attack), that the concept of teamwork arises. I like that even the guy we believe is EVIL is capable of adapting to his environment to survive, and maybe even live. Yes, there's a difference.

Third: Panem's leaders knowingly keep their citizens/districts oppressed. In the College Enclave, I'm not entirely certain they oppress by willful deceit. We know some amount of time has passed since the biological warfare, but how much? In Enclave, I can't be certain the leaders are deliberately lying. If people only live about 25 years underground, if they're lucky, it's entirely possible the "truths" they tell about Topside are what they learned from their predecessors, who passed on what they were told by those before them, who passed on what they knew from firsthand experiences. Does that make sense? Somewhere along the way, maybe the truth got twisted and elaborated in hopes of keeping the enclave safe. It's logical. And if nobody goes Topside, how can they know times have changed? They might not even understand enough time has passed for the world to rid itself of the toxins and has again become safe. That is a major difference between the enclave leaders and Panem leaders. Another major difference between Enclave and The Hunger Games.

Though Enclave works quite well as a stand-alone novel, I want to read more. Good thing there's a second and third book. I will be very curious to see how things pan out for Deuce, Fade, Tegan, and Stalker. Very curious. ...more

Ein Glück hat sie Fade an ihrer Seite, denn er wuchs auf der Oberfläche auf und kennt die Gefahren. Von seinem Vater weiß Fade das es eine Zuflucht gibt, irgendwo im Westen wo die Stadt endet, aber niemand weiß sicher, ob es sich nicht nur um ein Märchen handelt, aus längst vergessener Zeit.

So lange lag das Buch auf meinem Sub und jetzt bereue ich es fast, es nicht schon eher gelesen zu haben. Was für eine Achterbahnfahrt der Gefühle. Ein echtes Abenteuer, bei dem sich die Protagonistin von Seite zu Seite weiterentwickelt. Zunächst völlig ins System integriert, eine stolze Kriegerin, muss sie miterleben, wie der Ältestenrat sie ohne mit der Wimper zu zucken opfert um ein Exempel zu statuieren. Sie muss sich mit Fade an ihrer Seite in einer Welt zu Recht finden, die ihr völlig fremd ist und doch ist sie eine Kriegerin, eine Jägerin. Sie muss erleben wie ihre Welt sich wandelt. Wie die Freaks getrieben vom Hunger beginnen zusammenzuarbeiten und planvoll zu handeln. Ich habe Deuce die ganze Geschichte hindurch bewundert, ihre Stärke ihren Mut, aber auch ihr Mitgefühl. Atemlos bin ich nur so durch das Buch geflogen, denn es war keine Minute langweilig. Insbesondere als sie von den marodierenden Banden in der Stadt geschnappt wurde, um als Fortpflanzungsobjekt zu fungieren. Nach ihrer geglückten Flucht wurde es jedoch kein bisschen langweiliger, denn in dieser scheinbar verlassenen Stadt verbirgt sich hinter jeder Ecke Freaks oder andere Gefahren, wie der hereinbrechende Winter, der die Reise der vier ungewöhnlichen Weggefährten zu einem Wagnis werden ließ. Es hat mich gepackt und einfach nicht mehr losgelassen.

Ich werde wohl nicht mehr so lange warten, um mir den Rest der Geschichte zu Gemüte zu führen, dafür bin ich zu neugierig was aus Deuce und Fade noch wird. ...more
