The ten thousand years it took me to finish this book....
Ok, not quite but it felt that way.
It also felt like this book was ten thousand pages long.
With that said, I feel the need to also add that this is the third Alix E. Harrow book I have read and I have seen from experience that they start off very slow and vague. She is a story weaver. Her words are so well-woven and beautiful but in this case man, the plot is a strand that is only woven in occasionally. The characters seemed one dimensiona ...more

3 stars. Beautiful writing and an intriguing plot. Dull execution. This had potential to be at least a four star read but the beginning half was really difficult to get into and I also was not a fan of January. She never did grow on me and I found some of the other characters to be way more interesting than her. I do feel as if I will like this author’s other book a lot more because like I said her writing is fantastic. This one just didn’t land for me unfortunately.

A great portal fantasy. I really liked the family aspect in this story, particularly the father daughter relationship. Also, found family. I loved our main character, January, a seventeen year old, who acts her age but manages to save herself every time. Her magic stems from the written word. Cool! Harrow brings up issues of social classism and racism, without making them the point of the story. This is a classic adventure story, a girl and her dog out in the worlds.
