I adored this book! It was just so much fun. It made me laugh, cry and smile. There isn't much of a romance in this book and normally that would bother me but in this book it didn't. I was enjoying all the characters and the story so much it didn't matter. The secondary characters in this book are amazing - I just loved Lucy with his over the top death threats and his love for "Golden Oldies". I loved Chauncey the gelatinous boy with dreams of being a bellhop and Theodore and his love of buttons ...more

The House in The Cerulean Sea (⭐️ 4/5)
For me, it really came close to being perfect in all sense...

It is based in a world where magical beings live among humans. A case worker is sent to a mysterious orphanage to investigate the treatment of the magical children that reside there by their warden, a charismatic but peculiar man.

I stopped counting how many books like these have I left in the middle. I don't go for the sappy/emotional types usually. This one made me believe that I still have some f

I just loved this book. It took me back to childhood -- I have never been a high fantasy fan but liked a lot of kids' fantasy series like Half Magic and, obviously, Harry Potter. This one in particular reminded me of Eva Ibbotson. It was just so delightfully quirky and fun. It dealt with an obvious issue in society (prejudice) in a way that mostly avoided being heavy handed. I felt like the discussions characters had about prejudice against magical creatures were pretty analogous to IRL conversa ...more

TJ Klune writes the world as it should be: saccharine, kind, respectful, considerate, lovely, hopeful, wonderful, and magical. Why do we want anything other than that?

This is a book about difference. It is a book about different persons.
Lots of wisdom words.

And it says here you are quite alone. No spouse. No children. No one to miss you if you had to leave for any extended lenght of time.
But still- I have a cat.

But we must pick and choose our fights. Just because someone else acts a certain way, doesn’t mean we should respond in kind. It’s what makes us different. It’s what makes us good.”

I am so sad that I can’t go home to this island and its inhabitants. My heart literally breaks with joy every time I revisit this book. I am but paper. Brittle and thin.

MM, cozy with tough themes, found family, mature mostly average mmcs, slow burn, magical cast

“Hate is loud, but I think you’ll learn it’s because it’s only a few people shouting, desperate to be heard. You might not ever be able to change their minds, but so long as you remember you’re not alone, you will overcome.”

What a beautiful book! This was my first TJ Klune book and it was everything I’d read about it and more! Heartwarming, charming, enchanting, and enlightening. The message of inclusivity and acceptance was presented with skillful prose and I loved the magical descriptions of the children. This one will stick with me for a while, I think!
