#1 in the Alex Cross detective series
At first I didn't particularly care for Alex Cross. He seemed to have a chip on his shoulder about being black, or at least about growing up poor in an all-black neighborhood. I love discovering a good new (to me) mystery series. And while I've heard of Patterson's Alex Cross for a while, I hadn't read any of the series before. I love it! I really like Cross himself, both his strengths and his vulnerabilities. And I enjoy knowing exactly where everything is going on, since most of it takes place in the D.C. area. Beyond that, the twists and turns of the plot were complicated, engaging, and sometimes surprising.
