#1 in the Alex Cross detective series

At first I didn't particularly care for Alex Cross. He seemed to have a chip on his shoulder about being black, or at least about growing up poor in an all-black neighborhood. But as the story went on, I got to know him better and could appreciate his strong sense of right and wrong, his dogged determination to finish the case, and his willingness to protect the victim from the bad guys, from the media, and from bureaucratic red tape. I love discovering a good new (to me) mystery series. And while I've heard of Patterson's Alex Cross for a while, I hadn't read any of the series before. I love it! I really like Cross himself, both his strengths and his vulnerabilities. And I enjoy knowing exactly where everything is going on, since most of it takes place in the D.C. area. Beyond that, the twists and turns of the plot were complicated, engaging, and sometimes surprising.

I was very surprised how much I enjoyed this novel once the story got going. I enjoyed the flow of the story and how he brought all the characters to life.
