I gave this a really low review. I don't like giving a really bad review. I think if you are brave enough to create something and put it out there for the world- that takes some balls and I respect that. So I feel like I'm taking crazy pills because I've heard this series is AMAZING. Have I been a victim of some weird switcheroo?

I've heard a lot about the Anita Blake series, and I've finally started to read it!
I thought the first book was a nice insider to Laurell Hamilton's world, without it seeming like reading a description. I liked that you got bits and pieces as you read until basically the entire world was laid out for you.

The twist in this book is that Anita Blake isn't just a Vampire Executioner, but also an Animator (someone who can raise and put to rest the dead = zombies). Sassy, tough Anita Blake runs into some powerful master vampires and one makes her an offer that she can't refuse and one doesn't ask her first.

A nice quick-to-read story
Nothing too new when you've read your share of Urban Fantasy, but still a bit different considering Anita's profession.
I liked that the story didn't do the (by now) "usual" turn into loads of freaky supernatural sex, but I've heard that changes as the series progresses. I'll likely read the next book sometime, but it's not high on my TBR.

Through enjoyed this, keeps moving right from the start. Anita is a really good character. I did get a little bit confused by the story line (as to why the master vamp really wanted to kill her when she also wanted her to find out who the serial killer was). Did get rather attached to Philip as well (got a little bit emotional at the end).
Looking forward to continuing with the series.

Anita Blake is an animator who raises zombies. She also works for the police as a consultant and is helping them try to solve a series of vampire murders. The head vampire in town coerces Anita into working for her to solve the murders. I like the character of Anita and thought the solution to the mystery was good. I look forward to reading more of this series.

Feb 27th 2018: 10 years later and I have re-read it!. Still just as good as the first go!
I really enjoyed this book and I will reread it.
