This is the poignant and heartwarming story of Francie Nolan, who is growing up in a poor but resilient family living in the Brooklyn tenements at the turn of the 20th century. I put off reading this book for years, sure I would be disappointed after hearing so many glowing reviews. The second time was a charm

I picked up this book again after trying to read it years ago because my book club’s selection. The first time I tried to read it, I found it too sad, but this time, I saw a lot of joy inter-mingled with the sadness and hardship. I also appreciated how the author so beautifully depicted a world through the eyes of girl full of imagination and wonder over the world around her. This book is truly a treasure.
