Poe would later refer to his only full-length novel as "a very silly book." Modeled after popular sea-voyage exploits - fictional and non - of the time, Poe spins a wild adventure tale that encompasses several unlikely episodes in the young life of his fictional narrator, Pym. From a literary standpoint, Narrative is most notable for having influenced Verne, Melville, Doyle and Lovecraft, whose own At the Mountains of Madness could almost be a sequel to this novel. Tekeli-li! Tekeli-li!

Poe was not a novel writer and that really shows with this.
He's pretty hit or miss with his short fiction, so it's not too surprising that he's hit or miss in his novel too. Some chapters just drone on and on and on (which actually made this book an effective bedtime audio book) but other chapters, such as the ship the three men see after the storm is as fantastically macabre as some of Poe's best stories.

Well... there's quite a lot of questionable things, like three men living three days on a human body, probably a man of about 50-60 kilos... I would say there's more to eat in that. But - all in all a very interesting story. Except when he starts explaining geography and zoology. One could have hopped over chapters. And the racism. Well... I suppose we all know he was a racist. This book is no different.

Not a book I expected E.A.P. to write. A bit dull and reminiscent of MOby Dick here and there, but also some very interesting writing. Unfortunately that is in the middle. The end is frustrating to no end and I can't imagine why it is left this way.
