I am not really a fan of this genre so my words must be taken with that thought in mind, but I didn't really enjoy this story. I read The Cask of Amontillado many years ago and the shock of that story has lingered in my mind. I found it really scary. This one though just irritated me. I wasn't shocked or afraid. ...more

The antiquated language was all that marred this tale of an ancient family that has been dying out for a very long time. A premature burial instigated the last memorable scene. The lady Usher, the sister of Roderick had some sort of illness that rendered her apparently lifeless, yet the brother somehow knew that she was still alive. The climax comes in the face of a powerful storm and the reappearance of the sister. When she attacks her brother, he succumbs and dies, Our narrator rushes out of t ...more

Perfect read for a rainy day. Short, gothic, unexpected.

This story is all about atmosphere and it's pretty much only description, but it is still highly entertaining.
