What Members Thought

RJ - Slayer of Trolls
Like many stories that have been re-told, re-imagined, re-interpreted for generations, the original story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is not what one might expect. Hyde is small, not some raging Hulk-like monster but more like the personification of evil or the complete absence of good. The story itself is somewhat disjointed and a bit wordy at times, with plenty of Victorian-era histrionics, but it finds redemption and meaning in the final chapter, musing about the duality of man and - like Wild ...more

Good vs. Evil

We all have both sides existing within us, to say other wise would be false.

Fantastic story, one to ponder over and reflect about ones self.

I read this novella because it was one of the books Nabokov found worthy to lecture on. The plot is meticulous and the narrative cleverly set up. A masterly drama and a quaint exploration of the Manichean theme of good and evil in man. In my most recent reading, Jekyll is a much less respectable character than in my previous reading: he is weak, licentious and mostly unrepentant.

Was pleasantly surprised at how good this book was. I honestly did not know the story going into the book and found it very gripping. Liked it much more than either Dracula or Frankenstein.

As with many of the classics that have become a part of mainstream culture, this was good but not quite what I was expecting.

Re-read this for The Strange Case of the Alchemist's Daughter.

Now, everyone knows this story. A doctor experiments with himself and enjoys the bad inclination hiding in the good inclination from the consequences, but this won't do - he finds himself trapped in the bad inclination and forced to take the consequences.

It is rather good.
