Cassandra Clare continues to outdo herself with this incredible world she has so carefully constructed. The world itself continues to be complex and beautiful, just like with the Mortal Instruments series before it, despite the fact that it is set in the gritty, somewhat different Victorian England. As usual the characters are incredibly unique and occasionally troubled.
There was plenty of twists and turns, and some things that I just didn’t see coming. There w What can I say.....wow, just wow! As usual the characters are incredibly unique and occasionally troubled.
There was plenty of twists and turns, and some things that I just didn’t see coming. There wasn’t a single page from the moment I began reading that I wasn’t entertained, captivated and desperate to know what was gonna happen next.
I’ll be the first to admit that I had high expectations for this book before going into it and that I was a tad worried considering that I’m not usually fan of prequel series’, but my worries where unneeded, as this was excellent. I will say that I didn’t love it AS MUCH as Mortal Instruments, but it’s definitely up there in regards to storyline, characters and overall feeling.
The characters in this book were wonderful.....from Tessa, Will and Jem to Charlotte, Sophie, Henry and Jessie to the not so nice characters of Mortmain, Nate and de Quincey. They all have their parts to play in the story and they do it so well.
It was soooooo wonderful to see Magnus is this book, although I’d have liked to see more of him. He didn’t have a very large part, and I hope that he’s got a larger one in the other two books. I was shocked to see that he had a thing with Camille, but then again people change over time. One thing I loved seeing was that his outrageous fashion taste hasn’t changed over the centuries. He still dressed crazy, even back then. I thought it was very funny, and very fitting, when he mentioned to Tessa about how he preferred people with black hair.......hello....... Alec, anyone??

Tessa herself was a nice heroine. Considering how new she was to the whole Shadow World, and the fact that she had no clue as to what it was that is she up until she was kidnapped, she seemed to handle it all fairly well. Obviously there were times when she was vulnerable and weak, but when there were moments where it was required of her, she really stepped up.
Ok, so Will......glorious Will. I’ll start off by saying that I can defiantly see where Jace got his attitude and sharp tongue from. His ancestor here, that’s where! He’s definitely my type of boy, him being so sarcastic and witty and he cracked me up at times with some of the things he said, or did. And yet it’s pretty clear that there’s something he’s hiding, something that’s under the surface. There’s something in his past that he either isn’t ready to face, or doesn’t want to. And whatever that is, it’s the reason he’s pushing Tessa away, because he does care about her........it’s so obvious that even someone who was blind would spot it a mile away!
And Jem, oh sweet, kind Jem. I really felt for him when he spoke about his illness and I think it’s really brave of him to continue to fight and not let it stop him even though he knows what the eventual outcome will be. I liked him I did, but not in the same way as Will. Maybe it’s due to the fact that I have a thing for bad boys and I usually end up cheering for them, but I can see a stronger connection forming between Will and Tessa than Jem and Tessa.
Tessa and Jem seemed to get along really well and he was very kind to her, and who knows......maybe things will develop more between them in the next book, but Tessa has already got it bad for Will.

There was so much mystery in this book, but nothing as strong, or as important, to what Tessa’s background is; what exactly is she? Who is her father and what happened to make her how she is, so unlike any other warlocks.
And also....what is Will hiding? There’s something terrible in his past that is affecting him now, and his going to Magnus at the very end of the book just proves how desperate he is.

This book left me so desperate for the next one, it’s gonna KILL me having to wait until next year. Its sooooooo far away and I for one CAN’T WAIT for it to come out!!!!!

wow. I cant even think of words. I wasn't sure if i would like this book just because of the time era. But when i heard not only was it by by Cassandra Clare but it was a prequel to the mortal instrument series I just knew I had to read it. I had complete faith in Clare to pull it off but she still blew my mind. First of all I found the writing to be just plain wonderful, it was witty and actually made me laugh out loud. MY GOD. THIS BOOK. IT's JUST SO....AMAZING!!!
*faints* *gets back up* *faints again*

I literally sat on a stiff chair for 4 hours reading this utter astounding, and completely breathtaking book! I honestly love Cassrandra Clare writing. So witty, and sarcastic, and full of angst of not trusting anyone, and who to trust.

In my opinion this book was more mystery than paranormal.After reading it I ended up having more questions than answers.(Which is why I'll have to read the next one.Good writing Ms.Clare.)The characters were more lovable than I thought possible.Will was a complex little thing,Tessa trusted to easy,Jem's a sweetheart,and Charlotte and Henry were adorable.The plot was reasonable and well thought out and I'm looking forward to reading more. ...more

It was very nice. I quite liked it. Of course now I'm thinking in a British accent despite reading the entire book with an American one. Ah well. It was very good, I can't wait to read the next one.

Also, I'm Team Will. I don't know, there's something about him I just like. And I don't think Jem has much longer; so Will all the way! Whoo! ...more
