strikes a really lovely balance between readable juicy drama and complex cultural criticism.

the themes are fundamentally political, as the book opens with emira, a black 25-year-old sitter for a wealthy white family, being accused of kidnapping the toddler she cares for. misguided alix, the family's mom, becomes fixated on emira. the story teeters on the edge of 2016, with alix one of many non-intersectional white feminists campaigning for hillary clinton. there's a lot of intense stuff here abo ...more

I really enjoyed this book and wanted to give it 5-stars. As I stepped back a bit I had to drop a star because of the character of Emira. Maybe there are 25-year olds that are directionless like her, but I just didn't get that she doesn't have some kind of passion or interest in a career by that time of life. I don't like Alix's character, but she had more going on at that age. Yes, she has more privilege, but I don't know. Maybe if I knew more of Emira's backstory I would understand.
