Wyndham creates a prescient, thrilling, and scarily real vision of a future in the aftermath of a nuclear war here. In the insular world lead character David has grown up in, any fields that grow plants with any genetic mutations are burned, and any human "deviations" are hunted down and left to die in "the Fringes." This is a strain of sci fi that I really appreciate. Wyndham gives us a human society that has arisen in a different environment than our current world. This is a post-apocalypse story. Many centuries have passed and a boy growing up in a rigid agricultural world finds he is different in a society that does not tolerate difference.
