What Members Thought
In some ways, I wanted to rate this higher. I really did. It's extremely well plotted and structured. A lot of thought has gone into characterization and making the characters three dimensional.
So, I decided to err with my feelings. It was a good mystery and I especially liked the scenes with Robin and Cormoran. However, at times, it felt a little clunky.
I am definitely interested enough to move on to book #2.

What a pleasant surprise this one was for me! I was a little nervous about this one living up to the hype since the discovery that it was written by JK Rowling. But, it's a very solid detective/mystery novel. Really interesting main character and I loved the smaller characters as well. The story was fairly well plotted and paced! Although not a perfect book, this one was quite good and I look forward to the next in the series!

J. K. Rowling--I'm sorry--Robert Galbraith has fashioned a compelling mystery out of the most unlikely characters. When Robin Ellacott is sent by a temp agency to the office of London PI Cormoran Strike, she wasn't prepared for the rude behavior of Strike or for the fact that he was apparently living in his shabby office. In fact, Strike, who lost a leg to a land mine in Afghanistan, has just about hit rock bottom. Not only is he living in his office, but he's just broken up with his longtime gi

To me this was an entertaining little mystery!
Greater than my expectations which were not all that high after the reviews of A Casual Vacancy. A great detective story with a likeable central character even with his flaws. And an unexpected ending. I could not put it down and I would read the next one and may even try to read Vacancy to see if its really as bad as everyone says.
Cormoran strike is a private investigator who is hurting for clients when John Bristow comes to Cormoran's office and hires him to look into the supposed suicide of John's sister the supermodel Lula Landry. Cormoran has just gotten a new temporary secretary Robin who proves to be very useful in the investigation. JK Rowling can write mysteries as well as young adult series. I was surprised by the ending and enjoyed the investigation. It's just too bad that this book and lots of other good books
