Shelves: suspense-thriller, 20th-century, h-over-30, mystery, library, mystery-crime
This has all the right elements for a mystery/suspense, but they didn't come together for me into a compelling thriller. I suspect it's partly because this is an early (first?) book. I enjoyed it - especially the setting - but it just felt a little dry to me. ...more

wow, hard to believe but I finally found a novel too gross even for me to enjoy. I didn't like going all the way through the autopsy of each victim nor did I enjoy her obsessing about how they died and what their bones and skin looked like... it just got too over the top.

I also didn't understand or identify with the main character. Her fits of rage always seemed to throw me off because I never understood them. Her anger always seemed to be inappropriate to the situation.

Something about this one just left me flat and cold. The main character seems Too Stupid To Live throughout most of the book. A lot of graphic violence against women. The whole novel just seemed uneven and completely unrealistic to me. I will try the next one, but I am not a big fan of these types of thrillers.

I have just finished this for the second time and I was pleased that I couldn't actually remember what happened. I really enjoy this series although there were moments I got annoyed with Tempe for putting herself into obvious danger. Nevertheless, it was a good read. ...more
