***RE-READ ON 12/28/16***
Listened to the audiobook with my husband during a road trip. I loved it just as much the second time around (his first time). I can't recommend this book enough.
My Rating: 5 stars
His Rating: 4 stars
***Original Review 04/20/15***
I loved everything about this book! I loved Wade and all his awesomeness. I loved all the subtle humor. I loved all the secondary characters. I loved that it was a fast paced and easy read without huge unnecessary and complicated plot twists. I ...more

An incredibly fun read for me. Adventures within a game. Characters living in a gritty, hopeless world, trying to find an escape in a virtual world. Countless allusions to old school video games, MMORPGs, "virtual life" games like Second Life, as well as tabletope RPGs. Not to mention the 80s, a decade one may love or hate, but never forget if, like me, you've grown up during it.
This was a geek's wet dream, and I'm not ashamed to admit it. ...more

This was so GOOD! I have it on the Nook, started reading it there. Then the BOCD arrived in the mail and I decided to listen to it instead. Wil Wheaton is the narrator and he is perfect for it. He has the voice of a gaming smartass and he did a good job of performing all of the characters in the book.
It's a good book for many ages, even if you are a non-gaming person [like me], it is highly enjoyable. 80s trivia abounds as the clues show in that era for the most part. I liked the reminders of t ...more

I heard so many good things about this book and I hesitated a little bit to read it because I won't get the 80s pop-culture even though I grew during the 80s.
I am happy that I read this book because I really enjoyed the truth is that while reading it I heard the audiobook and I can't wait to watch the movie. The truth is while listening to the audiobook and reading the book I could see it in my mind. I love books when books make me fantasize the movie of the book.

I would love to rate this more a 3 3/4 stars than a full 4. Great story, but some literary tropes and a few too perfect parts took away from the story as a whole. I listened to the audio and wasn't overly impressed with the narration.

This is why I am glad I belong to a book club. This is something I never would have found on my own and it was completely delightful. The story was a ripping adventure and all of the '80s references just added to the fun.

A romping good time through a geek menagerie. Dinged a star (and really, should be more) for the "emasculated" heroines.

Great read...lots of 80s pop culture references. I highly recommend listening to the audio version.
