Allen specializes in uplifting tales of magical realism and self-discovery. Other Birds is as sweet as the marshmallow treats of the fictional Mallow Island, which is home to the Dellawisp, named after the fictional birds that flit through its courtyard. At the Dellawisp live lonely residents (who will clearly find comfort in each other), as well as the ghosts that they have to let go of (both literally and metaphorically). I have enjoyed Sarah Addison Allen's other books so much that I was doubly disappointed in this one. I just never clicked with any of the characters, living or dead. Zoey Hennessey shows up on Mallow Island, South Carolina, the summer before starting college in Charleston. She moves into a condo left to her by her late mother in an unusual little building that is home to a bunch of unusual people. Some of them are no longer living, some of them are about to be dead.
