Wow. This book! I'm so glad that I found S.A. Cosby's work ... I'm from Richmond, Virginia so it was particularly exciting when I read that he was from Virginia & this book did a great job of capturing the complexities of Virginia & Virginians. This book is not for everyone - very dark, disturbing, and VIOLENT. If that's not for you, skip this one. But, if you can handle that, I highly recommend it. "Folks like to talk about revenge like it’s a righteous thing but it’s just hate in a nicer suit"

I knew this would be an emotional read. The beginning was tough - such a tragedy for these 2 fathers to meet at their son's funerals. But as they band together and become fierce and determined, I was so hooked on the story it was hard to stop.

I don’t take the time to write reviews anymore, but this book requires me to break that (bad) habit.

I don’t like mysteries. I don’t like thrillers. Crime fiction? Not for me. THIS IS NOT MY GENRE.

But apparently my genre is incredibly well-written crime fiction based in my region; because I can’t rave about this book enough.

I’d heard of SA Cosby. Probably from NPR and definitely from Obama’s favorite books list. I’d apparently bought a couple for my kindle when they were on sale (I do that A L I don’t take the time to write reviews anymore, but this book requires me to break that (bad) habit.

It doesn’t mean anything except it sounds interesting and I’d like to read it one day. I have a problem. Help). So when I see a piece on CBS Sunday Morning a month or so ago and they keep teasing “a best-selling author an outside of Richmond, VA,” I was interested. *I* live an hour outside of Richmond — I wanna know who this guy is and where he lives. I don’t want to get too excited — it’s probably Farmville, so somewhere on the other side.

So imagine my excitement when I discover this man grew up and resides a county away from me. WHAT?! Then I find out he’s speaking at another neighboring county’s library event. I go. He’s amazing. Books immediately go to the top of the list.

I started with this one and couldn’t put it down. It was the one that most appealed to me and man, my adoration for it could not be higher. Admittedly, the (not-so-small) thrill of reading about places I’m intimately familiar with was beyond. And it’s ACCURATE. Name-dropping my first job (King’s Dominion)? Amazing. Perfectly describing areas of Richmond? Godsmacked. Casually mentioning a “town” (zip code is more accurate) in my county? Mind effing blown. I felt validated and seen in literature for maybe the first time ever. This is a best-selling book that people all over the world have read and imagined my backyard.

But I should get over my hometown pride and excitement. Even if this wasn’t set where I’m from and live (and honestly, have a background more similar to the super duper bad guy than the protagonists), I would still be obsessed. This is simply well-written and exciting. The characters evolve. They have depth. Is it a tad bit trite? Sure. But for the most part they are believable — especially for this area.

I know these characters. They are my neighbors. I get it. And I get the setting. I loved this book. Could not recommend more. ...more
