In 2016 we started this challenge because when one of our mods (Karen) joined Goodreads in 2012, she still had books on her "to read" shelf from back then. They just stared at her... mockingly... asking when she was going to either read them or remove them from that shelf...
So in 2016 we started "clean out the closet" to read or delete all the books left on your TBR added in 2012 or earlier.

Over the years we have played with the concept and changed things around a little, but the reading challenge is simple...
>sort your "to read" shelf by date
>pick the books that you are going to read which have been on your list the longest and set yourself a goal. You may decide to read all of your books from the oldest year, or you may just take the oldest 20, or 50, or 5 books on your list. Some people choose specific series books, or ARCs, or just random..... Completely up to you how you set your goal and how many books you read!

My experiment last year to try to tackle EVERYTHING on my 2014 shelf (my first year on Goodreads), went pretty well! I knew there was very little chance I'd get to everything, but I managed to shrink that particular shelf by 73%, and I reached 85% of my total goal, using books from other shelves. Not too shabby.

I wasn't sure I wanted to try that again this year, since my 2015 shelf is MASSIVE. But, I see a lot of things that can just be deleted straight away. So maybe...

To start, I'm going to carry over the remaining books from last year's challenge. This is what's left on my 2014 shelf and I will read or delete all of these before year end.

Cleaning out the TBR closet 2022 challenge
Duration: 1st January 2022 to 31st December 2022

In previous years, I successfully managed to get my TBR to shrink. However, last year I found a website that emails me with book deals on Amazon and my TBR list is now constantly growing. But I still managed to get 71 books off.
I am starting this year with 1,012 books on my TBR. I'm not sure what this will be like for me so I will start the year with a target of 50 book.
Last year I focused more on the years that I added books and cleared off the remaining from 2017. The other years have a minimum of 30 books year so this year I will focus more on getting as many from 2012 read as well as trying to read some of the books that have been on my Kindle for a long time.

I read 100 less book this year than the last three years (or 35,000-40,000 fewer pages). This is likely the new normal so adjusting accordingly.

I also read a lot less books this year than the previous couple of years, but I read more longer books so it kind of equals out. In 2020 I read the equivalent of a book a day (366) and that was a struggle but some of them were very short books. I don't need to challenge myself with that again so now I've been trying to just get some of those longer books off my TBR. I'll probably do the same next year too. Gotta get those books added in 2012 read.

I will focus on anything before 2022 and continuing series. I am in the middle of 72 series so I obviously have a problem finishing them :) I decreased my overall TBR by 27% and I will take it as a win! I am also very pleased with how many series books I was able to read.

I admire that you are mindful enough to know that making a list doesn't work for you. I admit that I have a word document to keep track of this and the other challenges I've got going on. If I don't have a list I will forget.

I have a tracking post for my challenges in the Member's Reading List section of this community, but I consider that less a 'to do' list and more a 'where is' list, so I can easily find my challenge posts and update them. If I try to make a list of specific books for the challenges or commit to reading one specific book, my brain will rebel and I'll end up not reading those books ever.

I have a whole private group set up where I have different sections for different groups, with links to every challenge I'm doing, as well as any extra info that's useful but I didn't want to put in the tracking post (and this way I'd also not need to keep scrolling back to the original post at the top of the challenge thread for info).

I also keep other stuff in there, like links to my gem collection, and somewhere to do "test posts" or collect ideas for challenges, etc.

Quite useful actually, lol.

The wait for 1-3 wasn't overly long just yet, but my anticipation was definitely worth it, loved them! Adored 4, but severely disliked 5. Lovedlovedloved 6 & 7, with the latter being a punch in the gut in a good way. 8 was a reread of one of my favorites I've been meaning to for ages to hopefully continue this time. 9 was a former DNF which I now finished in no time and really enjoyed! 10 was alright, nice atmosphere. 11 was horrible and uncomfortable, as it should be. Amazing. 12 was disappointing. 13 was lovely, but of course way too short. 14. Loveloved this! Perfect Christmas reading. 15. So happy I got to read this, been wanting to ever since he announced it. Beautiful, his voice while reading really added to it. 16. I really thought I got the ARC in 2021 but turns out it was 2020, woops kjhsdsg Absolutely loved it though!

September 10: Guess who slumped again?? I'll be happy to get to 10 at this rate!
October 10: I might just make it to 10!
December 27: I can't believe in just a few days I managed to get to 15!

December 30: I lowered my goal to 15 just so I can say I made it, because I truly feel what I achieved in the end deserves a win!

I hear you! I didn't have a slump, per say, but I got distracted by board games halfway through the year and my reading has taken a hit! So I haven't done as well on my 2021 challenge either. But, even though I'm crazy and have taken on board game challenges for 2022 as well, I'm still going to do this one because I really like the motivation to deal with books that have been languishing on my shelves FOREVER! 😅 Any progress is good progress!
