What Members Thought

It’s hard not to assume this book is like T.H.U.G. but it’s definitely not. I’m so glad I picked it up anyway. The young black male perspective is extremely unique and very necessary when having this conversation of race and class. Justyce was such a likable and realistic character. He does well in school and strives to get ahead, but he’s no punk either. I’ve been on a break from YA but there are some very adult, very real themes in this book. I must admit that I skipped the middle. It may have gotten one star, but that doesn’t seem fair for a book I didn’t fully read.
The writing was horrible. I think it only got acclaim due to its topic and how some critics love when authors use different literary techniques, but I found that overdone.
The coming-of-age story of a seventeen year old seems forced...maybe if he was 13 or 14 I’d get it, but him just realizing racial issues now? It doesn’t seem any more believable than most of the stereo ...more
