I have absolutely no idea why it took me so long to read this. I was hooked from the beginning. Sure, the lore is incredibly dense and the ideas are complex, but the writing is so well done that it reads very smoothly. The characters are interesting and their interactions even more so. I was fascinated by the powers that the Bene Gesserit learn and pass through the generations. And that is just what makes this book so fascinating. My thoughts are all over the place! Also, it reminds me so much of Star Wars (although it is Star Wars that was inspired by Dune)! It's political, philosophical and a great work of art!
It is a complex book with a great world, it tells you all about religion, traditions, technologies, family, codes and ah, the world-building!! This book was long and boring. The author gave too many unnecessary details, but slid quickly over some important things. I really, really wanted to like this book but I barely made it through. I'm giving it two stars because the story wasn't bad. The way it was written was the bad part.

I am stunned that I enjoyed this book as much as I did...because I am not generally a fan of science fiction. But Frank Herbert's book, Dune is so very engaging! I may just have to read more of the series! Shocking!
