Shelves: still-owned, literature, historical-fiction, spain

I adored this book. I thought there would be more magic realism, but in fact it was a complex and fascinating historical thriller which just kept you guessing. Occasionally, Daniel's cowardice grated a little, but his development over the course of the story was just fabulous and you could see as his strength and courage built as he dug deeper into the story of Julian Carax. One of the most fantastic parts of this story though was the truly evil villain, Fumero. He is one of the nastiest charact ...more

what a great little tale of adventure. and everyone should have such a great friend as Fermin.
I had guessed parts of the end, but the tale was a marvelous adventure and still surprised me. I love it!

The book wasn't able to draw me in at all. I know it has great reviews, but I don't like the style it's written in (I read it in German, though) and I don't care about the protagonist or the book he's so fascinated with... What I've read of the book so far sounded rather pretentious to me.
Needless to say that I didn't get far. I have so many books I still want to read and I felt like this one was stealing my time. ...more
