What Members Thought
:(
This book was both exhilarating and sad, inspiring and depressing, hopeful and dark. I got so close to the characters' they made me laugh, swoon and then moister my eyes, even shed a couple of tears. This is a smart, edgy, contemporary YA novel. It's got so much sweetness and sadness that it hurts to read it at times. About halfway through the novel, I took a break and read something else. I knew that there was simply no way that the book didn't contain some sort of heartbreak. And boy did it. H

"It's trying to hard" I thought. "Finch is annoying! And kind of a stalker. Violet seems bland, as if only defined by her own tragedy."
And honestly, all those thoughts were true. However, the story still worked. And I eventually cared for both of these characters and their story. (Even though I'm beginning to wonder why all YA heroines have to wear Chuck Taylors?!)

I'm not sure that I can find the words to describe how I feel about this book. And another challenge, how do I do it without spoiling the book? I don't feel like writing my thoughts down because honestly, there are no thoughts, there are only feels, and feelings lose so much of their meaning when confined into words.
Love the book, love the characters, love the quirkiness, love the romance, love the dynamics, love the adventure, love the feels. Hate the injustice, hate the bullies, hate the desp ...more

This was a really important book to read. While the story is mostly about Violet and Finch, and their relationship and individual struggles with mental illness, life in high school, the future, you get so much more than that. You see all the different forms that mental struggles can take - from bipolar disorder, to bulimia, to dealing with the loss of a loved one, to just trying to fit in through life. And you see the range of possible responses to such struggles. This is so much more than just

I might be heartless... But I couldn't bring myself to care right now, and I wasted too much time before giving up on the last book so I was all too ready to quit when the voices didn't grab me right away. Maybe another time.
