What Members Thought

Rachel N.
Marie-Laure is a blind girl living in Paris with her father who is the keeper of keys at the Museum of Natural History. Werner is an orphan growing up in a coal town who has an instinct for mathematics. The book alternates between the bombing of Saint-Malo in 1944 and the events in the main characters lives that led them to this point. Also connected in is a legendary diamond, the Sea of Flames. A beautifully written story. I connected to both the main characters.

Sweeping epic

Although the jumping around was a bit confusing, I really enjoyed this book. The descriptions were very vivid (especially those of Marie-Laure and her experiences). There have been lots of books written about WW2, but I felt like this was definitely a new take. Recommend!

I loved this book. I liked the multiple MCs, and how they understood the world from their viewpoints. Also I don't think I've ever rooted for a 'bad guy' to loose so badly, in quite a while. ...more

Gripping start, but slow end

I enjoyed this novel till about the last 60 pages where it seemed to drag on and on. Overall it was a good read and would recommend it.

There were some really well-written parts of this book, and some really boring parts, so I found the book as a whole pretty uneven.
