“If the lies don't kill you, the truth will.”
Wow, I can see what all the hype was around this one. I'm sad it's taken me this long (and a tough reading challenge task) for me to finally get this one off my shelf and read! And what an experience. The audio was wondering, really immersive.
I loved the idea of this Silo. The layers, the floors - and the little ways that they held each area separate and yet part of a larger ecosystem. And the characters were so unique and each had a piece of the sto ...more

If I'd read Hugh Howey's Wool back when it was a self-published, little book that could, I think I might have enjoyed it more than I did. Or at least I wouldn't have entered into it expecting the "next great thing" in the publishing world.
As it is, I enjoyed much of what does in Wool even if I didn't necessarily love it. As far as world-building and character arcs go, this one stands out from the crowd of post-apocalyptic novels. The hook (which I won't give away here, though I will admit I figu ...more

Again, I can't give this more than 4 stars because of the fact check fail. Which is a bummer, because the story wasn't bad. I will say that in a lot of ways, this book reminded me of the City of Ember. Only more grown up. And I didn't like the characters quite as much.
It's your typical post-apocalyptic story. Something bad happened (you don't really find out what. A bunch of people are saved to build a future (put into silos underground in this case). The elite keep powerful secrets from the mas ...more

A thought-provoking dystopian novel that raises a lot of really good questions about society as a whole, about sacrificing the few for the good of the many, and whether it is better for survival to “rule” with fear. It had some great plot twists and took some surprising turns. It also left a lot of questions at the end, and I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series in hopes of finding answers. Overall, an enjoyable book!
