What Members Thought

The Road is a peculiar book. I was simultaneously intrigued and bored by it. The particular writing style, where McCarthy omits all punctuation, but the period, works out well for me. I thought it helped me get deeper into the story without any visual markers to distract me. The action, even though slowly unfolding, is cinematic and vivid. The first time I tried to read this book, I struggled with getting into it. Only after I watched the movie did my interest in the novel rekindle. I'm glad I read it; while it's depressing, I found the love of the father to be heartfelt and the hope the boy carried and emanated to be refreshing with all the grimness around him. It may not be my favorite book, but it was a book worth reading.

This was an interesting book, not like anything I have read before. The breaks, stanzas, random throw of memories and no chapters can get extremely confusing if you do not follow closely with the book. This story is written quick paced and you feel like you are struggling with these characters. The descriptions of the scavenging, the despoliation and destructing is hauntingly beautiful.
