What Members Thought

I thought how boring could it be, when I first read the description, it's only about a man and his son trudging along 'The Road' post-apocalyptic... Err, nothing really happens and there ain't really anybody else. But how did such a book get such a fantastic reception from the world?

I really wanted to like this book, so I gave it more play than I normally would for a book that made me physically ill. Maybe I'm getting soft in my old age. McCarthy is a talented writer, but that's really the only positive thing I can say about the novel. What a bleak, ultimately pointless story of gratuitous macabre and abject despair. One star.

This story was haunting and beautiful all at once. A father and son trek in a post-apocalyptic world, looking for a safe and warm place to live, safe from the people eating survivors. The father's inability to give up on his son is moving, and the future world is horrifying. It's a very engrossing read, despite it's 3rd person, two character plot.

Cormac McCarthy's command of the language is amazing. This was a difficult read because of the dark nature of the post-apocalyptic situation at the center of the story. Nevertheless, the prose is wonderfully rich, lyrical, poetic.
