What Members Thought

Most definitely a juvenile book. Notably, the music in the audiobook (which is thankfully infrequent) is very twee and kind of annoying. This is a book about a dog called Rover (and later Roverandom) who goes on an adventure and (view spoiler) . I wonder if Tolkien based his adventure loosely on the Odyssey. It's a very sweet and lovely story. It's interesting that it is so juvenile and told in an "old-faerie" type of way since (I learned in the introduction) that Tolkien became, later on, very much against this style even when (like this book) told and written specifically for children. I also liked being able to see stirrings of themes and characters and places that would later on have such a presence in other tales. I smiled a lot while reading it and laughed out loud in places. Although a bit long-winded at times, in true Tolkien fashion, I found this to be a very endearing book. I envy Tolkien's storytelling ability, especially where his children are concerned. To think that Roverandom and even The Hobbit came from ideas of stories that he started telling his kids, is just mind-boggling. This was a cute and fast read and I quite enjoyed it.
