If you like Tolkien's more whimsical offerings, like The Hobbit, Farmer Giles of Ham, and The Adventures of Tom Bombadil, you'll like this. Cheers to the Tolkien family for being willing to share it with everyone else! ...more

Every year at Christmas time, me and my wife read a Christmas book, and this year, we chose Letter From Father Christmas by JRR Tolkien. It was a fun read, but I was most impressed by the fact that Tolkien wrote a letter as Father Christmas to his kids for 13 years! Not only that, he illustrated his stories, too, to give the kids a visual on what his letter was about! The time and effort he must have put in to help make Christmas a little more magical just goes to show that not only was Tolkien ...more

Dear Goodreads: No, I don't want to switch editions. Sometimes I read The Father Christmas Letters and sometimes I read Letters to Father Christmas. Strictly speaking, the editions should never have been combined. The combining of editions is one of the most irritating things about this site. ...more

What a great father. The care and thought Tolkien put into these letters is wonderful, and you can tell he wanted to prepare his children for the world at the same time. He vaguely mentions tragedies as England heads into WWII.

The audio version was...ok. The reader was good, but for some reason, they decided to play the same two Christmas songs for extended periods of time between each year. It got annoying fast.

It is really hard not to pick this book up and want to read it during the month of December.

The book incorporates the letters that Tolkien would write to his children each Christmas as Father Christmas. The letters told stories of happenings during the past year at the North Pole and include many drawings to enhance the tales.

A wonderful book that shows the Professor as a father entertaining his children.
