Thoughts originally published at Falling Letters in 2012, when I first read the book as a whole.
The Fellowship of the Ring:
- Leaving Bag End and Hobbiton was a very sad process for me. See this post for why 'that feeling' always gets me.
- One of the things that threw me off was the very drawn out time frame of the beginning of the story. It's, what, 18 years between Bilbo's party and when Frodo leaves? I had a lot of trouble envisioning Frodo as older. In fact, I don't, I keep with the image ...more

JRR Tolkien is one of the greatest fantasy writers of all time and he proved this by dedicating his life to it. He used personal experiances during the war, his friendships and love and creativity and imagery within his work to bring it to life.
