The cynic in me is waiting for the moment when Voinov will disappoint. Apparently, it will have to continue waiting. From the layman's point of view (on all things military), the only flaw of this story is that it's not twice as long.
I am not usually the fan of present tense narrative, but it works here - both to showcase the imminent danger and inevitable defeat of German side and Felix's feelings for Baldur, measured by ace's take-offs and landings. It also works in the prose, lyrical and touc ...more

A very meloncholy view of WWII, and the point of view of a German pilot and an aircraft mechanic that I found very fascinating.
During wartime, it is good to remember that the people on opposite sides of the war have regular lives, and the same challenges and concerns about daily life as we do.
At the end, it helped in realizing that there are always two sides to a war, and then of course, the war within oneself, as to what your own purpose is.

4 - 4.5 stars.
Different. That’s what I first thought while reading Skybound. Felix’s strong voice, his observations, his feelings and actions – all this created a calm and peaceful atmosphere, even though the story takes place at the end of WWII.
So yes, not what I normally would expect from Voinov. ;) Still, it’s a well written, beautiful story which I really enjoyed!
And Jacques – I could be wrong, but maybe we will read more about him?

So short yet so full of feeling and pathos. 2 men who should be worlds apart. Can they find solace and love with each other or will the end of WWII and the defeat of German tear them apart. I usually want more when I read a good short story, but this story was as near perfect as possible. A beautiful & touching view of a horrible time.
The research was amazing. I look forward to the novel also based on this research. Aleksandr Voinov is an amazing writer.

My first Aleksandr Voinov!!
And I impressed! Much!
I don't fancy war themed story (it's frustrating sometimes...)but I like how this story ended. And I hope there's more of it ^^ ...more

I'm usually not a lover of stories that happen during the war, the war tends to dominate my every thought and I can't concentrate on the rest.
Here I was completely interested in the story, the characters, and I wanted to know a lot more about the planes, the pilots and on and on.
My only regret is that it wasn't long enough. ...more
