What Members Thought

What a pleasant surprise! I haven’t read this author since the writing style on display in his first book (Bear, Otter, and the Kid) turned me off completely. Tedious, is how I described it in my notes. But this is a totally different animal. Sweet and charming. And he writes the children exceptionally well (which was *not* the case for the Kid). Thoroughly enjoyed it. Now which of his books are like this one and which are like Bear?? Hmm…

A big surprise I loved this book. It caught your interest from the start and after the children were add you can’t not read.
I listened to the audio version on a trip and it was well read.
The surprise was this was a sweet love story on many levels. the story is about right and wrong and stepping out of your comfort zone to change some thing that is wrong.

While I'm in my fifties, I think 7 and up would find something in this book. It presents some difficult topics, such as xenophobia, in a light way so that you don't feel beaten down with sadness or despair. I liked the variety of non-human characters. I felt that the backstory could have been fleshed out some more. I also found the story very, very predictable.
