Debra ~~ seriously slacking on her reviews ~~
This was a sweet story of paranormal found family, something TJ Klune does very well. Interesting, fun characters, lovely scene-setting and a subtle romance. This story read a bit young to me, and would definitely work for a teen audience; even though the two main adult characters are older, they could definitely relate to the "children" and their experiences. ...more

What a pleasant surprise! I haven’t read this author since the writing style on display in his first book (Bear, Otter, and the Kid) turned me off completely. Tedious, is how I described it in my notes. But this is a totally different animal. Sweet and charming. And he writes the children exceptionally well (which was *not* the case for the Kid). Thoroughly enjoyed it. Now which of his books are like this one and which are like Bear?? Hmm…

I have been a fan of TJ Klune for going on 6 years, and I am happy that he is finally with a publisher that will help him reach a wider audience. The oh so sweet tale of Linus Baker, a caseworker for DICOMY who has been in the job for 17 years. With a reputation for impartiality he is sent on a level four secret recon case to go Marsyas Island Orphanage to investagd the 6 wards held by the state and their mysterious caretaker.

But these six wards include a gnome, sprite, wyvern, transmutation boy (pomeranian), a green blob and... Lucy the Antichrist. And Arthur, oh Arthur.

So it's a story of growth, of love and of Linus discovering himsel

Oh. My. God. This book had me in tears -- of laughter, of sorrow, and big, sloppy, happy tears. An all-around lovely story.
