This book is really a long (and sometimes boring) setup for book 3, introducing the two characters that will confront a terrible evil that wants to resurface: Lirael, a daughter of the Clayr and Prince Sameth, Sabriel's and Touchstone's son. For most of the book both are confronted with predestined futures which one doesn't want and the other really wants but seemingly won't have.

Neither character was particularly likeable, specially Lirael, who was continually whining about how she wouldn't ge

I am not sure if it is possible, but I think I enjoyed this one even more than the first. I loved how it carried on the story of Sabriel and Touchstone, but introduced new characters. Lirael is a wonderful anti-heroine who grows so subtly and so well over the course of the book. This book has no conclusions, you need to read the next one to get those. But with Mogget and Disreputable Dog, how on earth could you go wrong?

I liked this one a bit more than the 1st, although I could have done with less teenaged angst although the reasons were made clear near the end of the book. I never understand, however, why seemingly every single writer or storyteller makes evil so much more competent, organized and stronger than the 'forces of good'. Garth Nix must be awful proud of himself after he finished writing this book, and making me cry like a toddler skipping their nap.

I absolutely loved the disreputable dog(which is in the bottom left hand corner on the cover)...

So much that my PTSD dog's mother is titled that.

This was the height of the magic system which was absolutely fantastic and it doesn't hurt that Tim Curry narrates the audio books.

3.5 stars. This story opens with a depressed Lirael on her 14th birthday and jumps to her at age 19. Lirael wants to have the Sight of the Clayr and despairs she will never gain it. In the meantime, Lirael practices her Charter magic until the Clayr send her on a mission. Story switches between Lirael and Prince Sameth, but I didn't find Sam's portion very compelling.

Tim Curry did an excellent job reading this story!

Sabriel was a much better story and it was more like a stand-alone prequel to Li
