Darynda Jones is a writer that has such a great skill for creating humorous and clever dialogs between her characters that you can be sure to have a good laugh reading her series.
And this latest installment of her Charley Davidson series is action pact, funny and hot like any of the previous we enjoyed. Charley is a Grim Reaper to help people cross over. She is engaged to the sexy Reyes Farrow who is the son of Satan. Somebody wants Charley to hunt down a witness to a crime and she is trying to figure out why and who. Reyes wants her to think before she leaps but knows she won't. So this is one of those books that I think I'd rate more highly if I didn't write a review. If you asked me when I finished what I thought I would have said that I enjoyed it. It's got a lot of Charley's typical snarky humor, great interactions with Cookie and some things going on in the supernatural world that promise more intrigue to come. And all of those things are true, but the more I thought about it the more some other things annoyed me.

If you asked me when I finished what I thought I would have said that I enjoyed it. It's got a lot of Charley's typical snarky humor, great interactions with Cookie and some things going on in the supernatural world that promise more intrigue to come. And all of those things are true, but the more I thought about it the more some other things annoyed me.

I've always had a difficult relationship with some of the humor in this series. Sometimes, like when Charley and Cookie are bantering it really works for me. And the random t-shirts and sayings at the beginnings of the chapter make me giggle. But there are times when the books take a more serious tone and I find the humor jarring. I think sometimes there isn't enough time before the one liners start flowing. I'm all for some gallows humor but to go right from abused kids to wacky one-liners is too much of a shift for me at times. This doesn't happen in every book, it did in this one.

The thing that really bothered me is a pretty big spoiler so I'm just going to tag the whole thing. (view spoiler) Without spoilers I'll just say that Charley makes some choices and has some reactions that I find at odds with her characterization of someone who helps people.

So I'm kind of back to feeling how I felt at the beginning of this series. There are things that work for me and things that really don't. The things that didn't work weren't as present in books 3 & 4 so those remain my favorites. In many ways, this book is a set up for things to come and there are some pretty big revelations at the end. It's certainly a series I'll keep reading but it's back to the library for the supply. ...more

I have more questions now than when I started the book...

As usual there are a ton of things going on and as such Charley doesn't have enough time to give them all the attention they need. There is a dead naked man in her car. Reyes wants an answer. She is hired to get someone's soul back. Cookie needs dating help. She is threatened to find someone. Her dad is acting weird. Someone is following her. And a few other things just to round it all out.
