5 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 - Another great instalment in a fabulous Urban Fantasy series that delivers on emotion and action in equal measure.

Magic Rises is book six in the highly successful single POV female protagonist driven Kate Daniels series by husband and wife writing team Ilona Andrews. This series is underpinned by a strong series arc, with plot and character developments which need to be read in the reading order for best effect and least chance of spoilers. Magic Rises is book six in the highly successful single POV female protagonist driven Kate Daniels series by husband and wife writing team Ilona Andrews. This series is underpinned by a strong series arc, with plot and character developments which need to be read in the reading order for best effect and least chance of spoilers. The majority of the series books are told from the POV of Kate Daniels, the titular protagonist of the series. There are some novellas and short stories which switch POV and protagonist to one of the excellent cast of secondary characters and a set of alternative scenes told from Kate’s love interest - The Beast lord, Curran’s POV.

Andrews delivers an exceptional universe for the Kate Daniels series in the previous five novels and associated novellas/short stories. The world exists in a state of flux between magic and technology, since the first shift to magic overcame the world, high rises and technology has been failing, with magic re-entering the world. Everything you thought was myth is likely real and the world is now the playground to magic wielding humans who control mindless vampires and shifters from all walks of the animal kingdom.

The action in ‘Magic Rises’ takes Kate and Curran with a band of their shifters across the ocean to Europe to play bodyguard to a female shifter pregnant with non-fraternal twins by two different shifter packs. In exchange for this less than ideal task the shifters have been promised ten barrels of the ‘Panacea’ an extremely rare magical substance that very few know how to prepare and which is a vital medicine to help young shifters going through the change from going ‘Loup’ - i.e. failing to fully transition through their first shift and going mad, resulting in them needing to be put out of their misery and to prevent them from causing harm. It’s clear this is likely a trap for the shifters, but when they arrive things are not as they seem and perhaps Kate is the object of the trap after all.

Kate is a powerful magic using human, trained by her adopted father to be a killer, with only one goal in mind, to kill her ancient, powerful and evil father, known as Roland. Kate has been operating as a Mercenary and then a Private Investigator for the supernatural community, all while keeping her magical blood and power under wraps until she can grow strong enough to challenge her father. Kate has gone from being a lone wolf Merc, to falling in love with and becoming Consort to the local shifter pack’s Alpha - The Beast Lord, Curran Unfortunately, her alliance with the shifters has meant she’s gotten a lot more attention than she was comfortable with. Particularly from Roland’s second in command, Master swordsman and magic wielded - Hugh D’Ambry.

The different location was interesting and it lent a different air to some of the politics from the previous novels. It also delved deeper into the history of Roland and his current troops and his chief lieutenant - Hugh D’Ambry. The interplay between Hugh and Kate was exceptionally well written, as was the emotional conflict between Curran and Kate. I fell even more in love with Kate and Curran, even if I sometimes wanted to knock their heads together a little. The self-contained plot of the novel worked well, while allowing sufficient time to be devoted to moving along the wider series arc and there’s a definite feel of the ultimate showdown between Kate and Roland being not that far on the horizon. The final few chapters were an emotional rollercoaster, showing the author’s aren’t afraid to make difficult character decisions.

All round a great read, but only if you’ve read the preceding novels, novellas and short stories. ...more

What to say without giving anything away? This held my attention from the beginning to to end. There are plenty of light-hearted, fun moments where the reader smiles and maybe laughs. There are also multiple moments where it is tough to not cry. And cry I did. The ending is both sad remembering who was lost, but also a beginning (of a sort).
Kate is an awesome character. Strong yes, but also compassionate (her rescue of Christopher). Curran and Kate face some challenges with their relationship. ...more

Magic Rises grabbed me by the heart from the beginning, shook it senseless and left me picking up the pieces till the last sentence. Oh, the feels!

Can’t talk much about the details in this book. So many good things and so many bad happened to our group of misfits. There is an underlying theme about family dynamics along with the pain and length a parent will go to save a child or future ones. What a ride. There are some few series that get better as the books progress. I believe it's because they have a complex concept and backstory and also because their writers start to get more comfortable with the tone of the story. This is most certainly one of those series.
It takes Kate a lot of time to develop into the person she is today and in interesting to see her blossom into a real person and not just an emotionally numb killer machine.
