Dammit, Gary! Do you have to make me cry in every book?!
Coyote Dreams is incredibly successful in one particular area: Murphy makes me care about these crazy characters. Whatever the flaws in the series, I enjoy visiting with this reluctant shaman and her loony but endearing circle of friends.
I didn't love Thunderbird Falls, but with Coyote Dreams, Murphy seems back on track, bringing back the whimsy and emotion that characterized the first book.

***3.5***
I'm not liking this series as much as I want to.
The stories are good, for the most part. But there are a couple critical problems that are really keeping me from being as invested as I feel like I could be in the characters.
I don't have a lot of tolerance for heroes that, three books in, are still denying reality. Frankly, I was over this in book 2. For her to still struggle with being a skeptic, at this point, makes her seem ridiculous. She's seen so much extraordinary, clearly superna ...more

For me, it was almost impossible to like this book because the main character, Joanne Walker, disliked herself so much. And all the stupid mistakes she made, one after another after another after another. The chain of her mistakes that led to suffering for everybody seemed endless. Basically, the whole book was about her running around like a headless chicken and falling in and out of spirit quests or trances. It was way too long and the mysticism seemed overwhelming, leading to a general lack o

As the synopsis says, throughout the book her fellow officers are falling asleep and not waking up. Coyote is (mostly) MIA in this one but when he does show up, its enough to pull at your heartstrings. Oh and Gary.... Bless his heart. Don’t even get me started about the Wonder Twins though, I just wanted to slap our characters upside their heads for being so stupid.
Through research, and sheer luck, she discovers something that keeps the deep sleep away from those she cares about. They don’t all ...more

My favourite one of the series so far. (view spoiler)

Better than the second book, but still too much whining. Jo has the potential to become a strong and powerful shaman and I just wish she would get on with it. I do love all the secondary characters in this series, and even Jo herself most of the time, so I will stick with it to see where the next book goes.
