The first part of the book was written very differently from the other books in the series. I had not been sure at the end of book 3 if the author was going to be forced to use a deus ex machina scenario for the characters to recover from the horrific events that had taken place. I think the way that the author wrote part one of this book actually overcame that need, making a somewhat logical transition for the characters to evolve back to normalcy. At first, I didn’t like how the section of the book read, but afterwards it really grew on me. It was an interesting section in the book, and I think a necessary one. Plus, it was really fun to see a different side of Barrons, albeit temporarily. Who knew Barrons would sing and dance along to songs like Tubthumping? ;)

Part of this book felt sort of like the tv show Quantum Leap, with Mac flipping from one realm to another. It was certainly interesting, but very random alternate dimensions. For those of my goodreads friends that are hardcore romance fans, they will likely not enjoy this part of the novel. I found it interesting, though - the sci-fi fan in me, I suppose. There is also a lot more surreal type situations in this book than the previous books, so it makes it a little more of an abstract type of read. Lots of brain power required at times to conceptualize what is going on.

I have still somewhat convinced myself that Barrons is the former Unseelie Fae King. However, the other (somewhat more logical) side of my brain says that is obviously not the case. I just can’t decide. Good or bad? Human/Fae/Something else? Maybe he’s the beast-master like that bad 80s movie character. hehehehe

Of course, now I’m also just as confused about Mac as I am about Barrons. Is she really human? What is she? Is she half-fae? Maybe she’s a reincarnated concubine from the Unseelie King’s past? Why is the Sinsar Dubh so obsessed with Mac? What is the prophecy?

So many questions… Who was the fourth tattooed person in the church? Who covered all the wards in the abbey during Mac’s time there at the beginning of the book? What happened in those 4 days between Halloween and Barrens and his crew’s arrival at the abbey? What happened to Christian after the stones were pulled the last time? Just who is O’Bannyon’s dentist that he had chainsaw teeth? Hehehe. Sorry.

Luckily, I did get a few answers though… like the identity of IYD on the cell phone. Well, I thought I understood who the IYD was until the last page. EEK! Another cliff-hanger.

I guess now I begin the wait until book 5 is published. Ack. Patience is not one of my virtues. My one reward is that Shadowfever will be the last book in the series, so there must be answers to my questions. Right? ...more

Fourth of Five book Series
Well. It was a great read. From start to finish I was on an emotional high. I thought Mac really evolved in this book into a woman, into a formidable force. She was strong, capable and determined. (Once removed from Pri-ya of course)

The book took us immediately into action and never really let up. Hammering info at us every turn, and action on every page. Karen delivers as usual. Her foreshadowing skills are second to none in my opinion.

My original review still stands, but I have to point out that the most emotional scenes for me were the beginning, when Mac wasn't herself and that very last scene when Mac realized that she has lost more than she thought she could. All I can say is...Wow!!

No matter how many times I read it, and I've read it a lot, it still evokes the same gut-wrenching feelings as it did the first time around.

Why did I put off reading this when it finally arrived? Perhaps because of the long wait until I can get my hands on the last volume (I might actually break down and buy the hardback...) I should have re-read the last pages at least of Faefever as I'd forgotten some crucial things about Halloween. I was annoyed by Dani at first, but was quickly sucked into the story again...and loved it (obviously from the 5 stars).
