This is a really interesting, really ambitious book. I enjoyed it, even as I spent a lot of time analyzing it on a meta level, because some of the choices really surprised me, and I just couldn't decide whether they helped or hurt the book.

Another thing that was a little bit off to me was that I like Niko better as a main character than I like Cal, so (view spoiler) He's an amazing character, with a lot more emotion under the surface... I would have loved to get into his head.

But there were lots of things I did like. The relationship between the brothers was arguably one of the best such relationships that I've ever read. I liked that there was no bullshit, no misunderstandings, no hurt feelings, no recriminations between them. They were solid, unwavering, and absolutely had each other's back. And don't get me wrong, I did like Cal. I just found Niko to be particularly fascinating.

Cal isn't human, entirely. He's a crossbreed, created for one thing and one thing only....

I wasn't sure I was going to like this book. I can't remember the last time I read something where the protagonist was a male. Not that I have a problem with that specifically, but it just seemed odd for some reason. Once I got into the book, I actually enjoyed the story. I really liked the beginning and the end was satisfying. However, I almost gave up on it about halfway through it. I liked the main characters of the story quite a bit but I thought that a few of the major supporting characters could use a little more 'fleshing out'.
