A bit thin on the plot but the characters totally make up for that! Eli is simply hilarious. He's arrogant and pompous and cheeky and immensely capable but also really, really lovely. His friendship with Josef and Nico is a hoot and I can't wait to find out more about them. And Miranda and Gin are simply precious. Even the poor kidnapped king was great. I can't wait to get my hands on book #2!

Glad I missed this when released. Now I get to binge read! :)
An interesting debut from Rachel Aaron, who's created a world of spirits and the wizards…ahem, spiritualists that work with them. The plot was pleasant enough and the characters only mildly annoying at times *cough*Miranda!!*cough* One of the main things that did bother me though, was repeated descriptions and explanations, more telling than showing, which eventually became easy to gloss over. I may get to the sequel at some point and it's convenient they're releasing a book in the trilogy month

3.75 stars. Great idea of talking to the spirits of nature and gaining their aid. Eli Monpress is a thief who uses his talents to steal, kidnap and for personal gain. Miranda is a Spiritualist from the ?????????? tasked to apprehend Eli. The beginning of the book was captivating as was the end, but the middle third was quite slow.
