2 for the first 60%, 3 for the last 40%. I'm not a fan of the enemies to lovers plotline and I really don't like Sabine much. She could dish it but not take it. I don't like her woe is me attitude. Like other reviewers have noted, she's not the only immortal to have had a hard life and they're not bitchy assholes. Rydstrom was a serious letdown. Where was the king from previous books? I liked him in previous books but disliked how he treated Cade. We are told he's one way but we only see glimpse ...more

Sabine is an evil sorceress and the Queen of Illusions, and at the behest of her brother she kidnaps Rydstrom Woede. Centuries ago, Sabine's brother Omort stole Rydstrom's kingdom from him but wishes to permanently quell all rebellion by possessing Rydstrom's heir. Sabine takes Rydstrom to a dungeon, intent on forcing him to declare her his queen but soon she realises that as his fated mate she is more drawn to him than she could ever imagine. This is the sixth Immortals after Dark book (after A Hunger Like No Other, No Rest for the Wicked, Wicked Deeds on a Winter's Night, Dark Needs at Night's Edge and Dark Desires After Dusk) and takes the majority of it takes place at the same time as events in the previous book. That means I started reading this already knowing of two key interactions between Rydstrom and Sabine, which meant the book had less tension than those before it.

I liked Rydstrom when he was introduced in previous books, but this book made me like him a bit less. Previously he's always been presented as the level-headed Woede brother, and while it was interesting to see Sabine get under his skin he overreacted at times to the point of being a jerk. Sabine is my least favourite IAD heroine so far, and I found it difficult to find anything really likeable about her. I couldn't figure out if she was a victim of circumstance or just a nasty person, and unlike other 'bad' girls (like Artemis in the Dark-Hunter novels) I didn't really enjoy her evilness.

The whole novel has a fantasy feel to it as it is mostly set in the demon kingdom of Rothkalina and while I do enjoy fantasy novels, I am very picky about them. While the world is well crafted and described I just didn't find it that interesting, and there were some parts that just didn't make sense (the idea that the kingdom was stuck in the 1600s for over a millennium but the book is set in the present day, for example).

The plot is well thought out and does bring a conclusion to the whole Rydstrom/Cadeon/crown situation, and it manages to not always take the most expected path. I did like the introduction of Lothaire (the new leader of the Horde) but it did seem a little like he was thrown in to begin the lead-up to his own book.

All in all, this was an okay read and I'm looking forward to Pleasure of a Dark Prince.

Not my favorite of Cole's book, but still a fun read. It kind of reminded me of a naughtier version of Taming of the Shrew. Probably my least favorite guy/book of the series. Favorite part was Nix's letter to Omort. I'm not convinced Nix is Nucking Futs...I think she's crazy like a fox. ...more
