I’m always fascinated by the many variations of vampires out there in the literature. In Red-Headed Stepchild, vampires are descendants of an illicit union between Cain and Lilith. Most people are familiar with Cain, but let’s take a few minutes to talk about Lilith, who is one scary lady in the folklore. Lilith was known as a night demon. When infants died in their sleep, Lilith was to blame. She appears in a lot of the literature written at the time of the Bible. When Jaye Wells used Lilith as

Sabina is half vampire, half mage. She's been brought up by her vampire grandmother, after her mother died, thinking that her mage family didn't want her. She is an assassin for the Dominae, which is the vampire ruling body, headed by her grandmother. But on her latest assignment, all her beliefs about the people she loves and calls her own, and what she knows about her past, is all going to be put to the test and challenged.

So we have a half-vampire, half mage assassin named Sabina who is trying to gain acceptance from her vampire grandmother who shows no love or adoration to Sabina. Sabina gets herself in some shit and finds out more about herself in the process from hunky and sexy mage named Adam who looked ultimately delicious in nothing but a towel. And now she has to choose sides, the Mages or the Vampires. No one said life was easy.

I listened to the audible version of this book. I thought the narrator did a great job of capturing the different characters.
Red Headed Step Child is the first book in the Sabina Kane series, so it is the set up book- the one where the players are introduced and the world is built. Often that is boring and tedious. Not so in this novel. The action is pretty much constant and intense with new tidbits being revealed at every turn.

I started out not caring for Sabina, but ended up liking her a little more by the end. Sabina's greatest weaknesses are her blind trust to her family and her inability to trust herself completely. She makes great strides in both by the end (thank goodness!). Hopefully she will learn more about the world she lives in as well. "Again I wondered how I could have lived so long and not known more about the other races."
Nice twist with the certain family member(s) too.
