Well holy shit.

I blitzed through this, sacrificing way too much sleep after it landed on my Kindle at 10pm last night. And now I'm left reeling. That ending...I am dying here. I hope the next book comes fast.

I think I'm going to reread right away because I'm sure there are details I missed as I wolfed it down in less than 24 hours. I'll write a better review then.

Immediate re-read (2022)
Alright, so I finished a slower re-read to really absorb all the details. I'm now emotionally traumatized all Well holy shit.

Immediate re-read (2022)
Alright, so I finished a slower re-read to really absorb all the details. I'm now emotionally traumatized all over again, but I regret nothing.

I loved watching Kira's relationship with Graydon, Harlow, Finn, Raider, Devon, Joule, Elena, and Wren continue to evolve. This series has such a fantastic core cast. And fascinating secondary characters, like Torvald - man would I love to get a peek into his head.

I want to talk about some of the things we learned in this book, so the rest goes in spoiler tags.

(view spoiler)[Firstly, this book confirmed my theory that the Tsavitee generals and the Tuann are related - Elise and Aaron explain all that. To ensure the Tuann who didn't escape are obedient, they punished them by forcing them into monstrous forms (the general form that Kira knows from the war) and took all their children away to the camps that Kira and Jin grew up in. They occasionally slaughter one of the children to remind the generals what will happen if they aren't obedient. It's all just fucking awful.

It makes the Tuann sitting out the war that much more shameful, though. And frankly, given the level of Tuann collusion we've seen with the old masters - this book takes it to new and shocking levels - it was likely that Tsavitee allies applied pressure to keep them out of the war. Even more shameful.

For a species that likes to judge all others as beneath them, the Tuann are shockingly corrupt. Which points back to one of the first things the lu'ong told Kira, back in book 2 - the rot needs to be eliminated. Unfortunately, it is starting to look like that rot is running through a significant percentage of the Tuann population.

And that rot permeates everything in their society. Kira even comments on it in the adva ka - a rite of passage that was supposed to celebrate their strength, with Houses that help lift and protect their people, has become a disgusting practice where the emperor has to fill the trial with guards because Houses will look for any opportunity to kill promising members of other houses, or stomp down those with potential so they never get to a position of power. This whole book was bursting with people doing that to Joule - an orphan child with no political power but great potential. Rather than shelter and lift him, at least two houses were determined to see him destroyed. It's fucking disgusting. The entire Tuann society needs to be shattered and remade.

And maybe the lost children will be the way that happens. In this book, they made a point to state, multiple times, that they would never make war against each other. Even if they all came back and took places in different houses, the lost children have been bound like family by the hell they escaped, and they will never make war on each other. This is the seed of a society that would save the Tuann.

I'm still not sure what I think of the 43. They sent Elise to kill Kira. Pallas has tried to kill her multiple times. This book tried to shift the perspective a little, with Selene's POV all about how they all love Kira and Jin but are determined to never let them know that. Alexander even slipped a few times, implying he followed them closely in the war. Selene seemed to imply they'd interceded a couple times, when things were dire. Which... what? Why? And why keep that secret? Do Kira and Jin not deserve to know they are loved? Why try to kill them, repeatedly? We don't have the whole story yet, but man I want it. And also, seeing them fight together - Kira, Selene, and Alexander - was glorious.

Elise. I... don't trust her at all. There's no reason for her to hidden this all from Kira and Raider - they would have helped her. And her callous disregard for all the lies, betrayals, and bodies she has left in her wake is horrifying. I can't decide if she's just utterly nuts - like, broken by years of torture - or just lying to Kira about all of it, trying to keep her off balance in some epic mind game.

And lastly, Rothchild. We don't know how Elise survived, but I'm inclined to believe none of the rest of the Curs did. That scene at the pools, with a last kind of goodbye from Bayside... It was too real. The Mea'ave is like ... The energy of the soul. It wouldn't be a stretch to believe that in death, you're rejoined with the Mea'ave, and that was really Bayside, trying to give Kira some peace. And I cried my damn eyes out.

Regardless, there are big secrets there that will still be pivotal. Firstly, there's still a traitor out there human-side that needs to be revealed, and I feel like it is going to HURT. Could be Elise. Could be Jace. Could even be Blue. Could be one of the 43. And speaking of the 43, Selene said something in her POV that made me nervous. She said that Kira and Jin are like the sun, with the 43 being dark planets that orbit them and protect them from the shadows, only interfering when things seem like they will end in disaster...like Rothchild. That makes me very nervous. The 43 interfered in Rothchild. That means they were there (that's why they're on the suspect list for traitor). And they did something. Remember that Kira and Himoto never figured out what caused the moon to explode - and kill her Curs. Kira was calling the Curs to her, to do a burst with them in the eye of the storm... And then boom, everything blew. Doppelganger Elise claimed she did it, a lesser form of Kira's burst, but she was a liar so you can't put much weight on that. And Elise was offended at the implication she had done it in this book. I'm inclined to believe that wasn't her. But was it one of the other 43? Man, that would be a fucking disaster - Kira would kill them if she found out they killed her Curs. I really hope it wasn't them. Or that the Curs were already dead when they did what they did (because Tsavitee had to have taken Elise before the explosion, or she'd be dead... So maybe the Tsavitee blitzed the Curs right before the explosion, grabbing Elise and killing the others).

And lastly, Jin. I'm very afraid for him. There's indication that the only reason he didn't lose his mind like the rest of the soul bound is his bond with Kira - Tuann need those bonds to thrive, and it gave him that important link. But with their bond stretched so far Kira was left catatonic... is he okay?? She has other bonds - Raider, Graydon, probably nascent bonds with Finn, Harlow, Joule - and it wasn't enough. Jin only has her.

He better be okay. I don't think I could survive the loss of Jin or Raider. (hide spoiler)]

Damn, that ending! And, those last chapters! Man, White makes the wait between releases difficult.

This is book 4 of the Kira, Jin & Graydon story.

Full of twists & turns, great secondary characters, and stubborn h who ends up the Heir of Roake. Explosions, spaceship crash, maiming & betrayal. Jin is a soul trapped in a drone, and we finally find out how that happened. Graydon is still the coolest boyfriend, being the youngest Face of the Emperor. (There are 6 Faces as its a mighty big Empire, with lots of planets)

And sadly, this ends on a huge cliffhanger. Luckily for me, the next book is al ...more
