I loved this book. I love gothic literature and this was a fantastic modern gothic. It reminded me of the old gothic paperbacks I bought at used bookstores when I was younger.
(I've been drawn to idea of the gothic, that beauty in darkness since I was a small child, that and fantasy) But yes the used bookstore would have a bunch from the 60/70s for like .25 cents or so and I would by bag full (I wish I still had them) And Mexican Gothic has captured that same feeling.

The story wastes no time taking us to our gothic mansion setting, where nothing is as it seems. The creepy visions and unraveling mystery felt very Crimson Peak with some truly grotesque imagery and violence. It was a fun ride but meandered a bit and failed to keep my interest in the too-co

I have to admit I was so looking forward to reading this book but was let down by the majority of the story. It wasn't a long book thankfully because if it had kept going on I probably would have given it 2 stars. All the stuff that happened at the end is what actually saved this book from 2 stars or less.
I pushed myself to finish the book but it was truly a struggle for me. ...more
