I liked it - it is very addictive!

Took me a minute to get with the street slang and poor choices that Chess was making. I think I will have more empathy for the characters when their backgrounds are revealed. I am hooked. Love the dark, gritty storyline... Favorite scene: Terrible kicking Doyle's arse! Favorite line: Chess asked Terrible (after he was obviously injured) to tell her about one of the worst injuries he sustained and Terrible replies: "I once had a dame bite me." 3.75 stars Very original, creepy and intriguing tale that took me a while to get into but I'm glad I persevered. Chess is a Debunker (a ghost hunting witch) for the Church of Real Truth. The Church rose to power when ghosts first walked the earth in 1997, killing 2/3 of the world's population. Chess is forced to exorcise an airfield by a local crime lord (Bump) who is also her drug dealer. At the same time she has a new job for the church, debunking a ghost from a family home.

Sometimes I want to tell a book "It's not you. It's me." and I felt like that reading this one. There's a lot to like here, it's an interesting world with it's new world order and devastated population. Chess is an interesting heroine, and if I was unsure at first about a drug addict narrator, I think Kane does a good job of letting us know the whys of Chess's addiction. Although she's got some strong powers in many ways Chess is one of the most vulnerable UF heroines I've read, which makes her ...more

Wow! This is a dark, gritty, in your face book that I did not quite expect. In a future where religion has been put aside, Chess is a Debunker for the Church of Truth. Debunkers get paid by the Church to prove that ghosts are not involved in fake hauntings. Chess' life is a whirlwind of chaos. She is a drug addict and owes Bump, the local dealer a huge amount of money. In an effort to repay her debt, Chess becomes embroiled in a turf war both physically and spiritually.
