This was a completely different read for me! Yes, it's urban fantasy, yes there's ghosts and Chess is somewhat of a ghost hunter, but I was not expecting the storyline to be what it was. To say I was surprised would be an understatement. So I figured the easiest way for me to review this is in a What I liked and What I didn't format.

I liked it - it is very addictive!

Took me a minute to get with the street slang and poor choices that Chess was making. I think I will have more empathy for the characters when their backgrounds are revealed. I am hooked. Love the dark, gritty storyline... Favorite scene: Terrible kicking Doyle's arse! Favorite line: Chess asked Terrible (after he was obviously injured) to tell her about one of the worst injuries he sustained and Terrible replies: "I once had a dame bite me." Unique! That’s the best way to describe this book. There is a reader beware on this one. It is EXTREMLY dark, with very dark subject matter. However, I really enjoyed it. This was a book I had a very hard time putting down once it got rolling. Now, that said, I would also have to point out that it was a little slow starting for the simple reason that the world the author has created is very different. She even has a unique way the characters speak which takes a little getting used to. Once you g ...more

Wow! This is a dark, gritty, in your face book that I did not quite expect. In a future where religion has been put aside, Chess is a Debunker for the Church of Truth. Debunkers get paid by the Church to prove that ghosts are not involved in fake hauntings. Chess' life is a whirlwind of chaos. She is a drug addict and owes Bump, the local dealer a huge amount of money. In an effort to repay her debt, Chess becomes embroiled in a turf war both physically and spiritually.
