What Members Thought

I enjoy this series about (semi)retired assassin Gin Blanco. The world building is good and the magic system based on command of certain elements is very creative. Gin herself is a sympathetic narrator and I also enjoy her relationships and banter with her friends. The romance so far hasn't really gone anywhere and I'm hopeful, that since one interest seems to be exiting as the other is leaving, we won't be subjected to a prolonged love triangle. Really, the only think I don't particularly like

Gin Blanco is trying to enjoy retirement after the loss of her handler, Fletcher. An attempted robbery at the Pork Pit followed by a shooting and the attack of an innocent girl puts her back in the assassin business. Heavy hitters with money, power and magic try to prevent Gin from discovering what is truly going on. Detective Donovan Caine is back as her love interest....or not. The assortment of giants, drawves, vampires and elemental magic users provides a rapid pace for the story. Gin deals w

Gin's strong personality and self-awareness are just part of what makes her such an interesting character. Interesting is good. Gin knows who she is, feels no need to justify her actions and makes no appologies for her chosen profession, unconventional even in crime-ridden Ashland. That's why her continued attraction to Donovan is slightly annoying; it's patently obvious he's never going to accept her completely. It's human nature to sometimes want what we cannot have, but Gin doesn't seem the t

Almost a 5 star book. Really really close. I am loving this series so far.
The characters are all great, the world-building is interesting, and the story just sucks me in. It's funny, I know Gin survives because there's at least one more book and killing off the heroine would be bad, but I get totally nervous reading about it and wondering how she's going to pull off another kill and survive it.

One thing that bugged me a little while reading this book was that there were so many repetitions. I understand the need to remind readers of what happened in the previous books, but there is such thing as too much reminding. It did pull me a little from the story. I know what you're going to say, "skip those parts". I've had some other people say that to me many times. But you see, it's the same thing, really, because I know why I'm skipping a paragraph.
