This "hero" is a sociopath. I get that. But though his general psychopathic violence is disturbing enough, when he refers to rape almost as an aside, I get particularly angry. Our society is already inured enough to violence which is awful. Do we need to look at rape as akin to burning a house down or killing livestock? I know which I would never choose.

Thank you Mark Lawrence for getting me out of my fantasy reading slump!
Just......wow
The voice of this book grabs you from the first paragraph and doesn't let you go til the last sentence. It was brutal-sometimes making you want to cover your eyes, but there is also a balance filled with the pain and rage of lost innocence.
I am quickly moving on to the next despite the overpriced Kindle version.
Favorite Line:

You know those fantasy novels where the hero is a young man and he slowly learns his way in the world becoming a powerful hero and force for good? This ain't that book.
Prince Jorg is honestly a nasty piece of work. Yes, one could argue that he's a product of his environment and affected by outside forces, but then again.... maybe he's just a mean little bastard.

I struggled with this book most of the way through for the main reason that Jorg, the main character, is just so nasty. I couldn't find it in me to like him and so I ended up reading half of it then putting it down for over two months before coming back to finish it. In fact, for most of the book, all the way through to Jorg's destruction of Castle Red and his revelations as to why he behaved the way he did, I was wondering why I was actually reading it. The ending was quite good though, but I p
