Another great adventure with Pia and Dragos.

Pia is really With Child. And we get the fun of late stage preggerness.

This novella moves the series into a new arc and is great that way.

And the new baby is everything. Plus, powerful Pia, Sexy Dragos, some new beings and old friends.

This novella is the final instalment to date in Thea Harrison’s Elder Races series, which started with the Dragos/Pia POV novel Dragon Bound and had them as secondary characters in the other main novels and the two POV and primary protagonists of a series of novellas throughout the series, culminating in this final novella. This novella is the final instalment to date in Thea Harrison’s Elder Races series, which started with the Dragos/Pia POV novel Dragon Bound and had them as secondary characters in the other main novels and the two POV and primary protagonists of a series of novellas throughout the series, culminating in this final novella. Dragos has also popped up in the Moonshadow series, which is written in the same Elder races universe. Although ‘Planet Dragos’ has a self-contained plot with its own HEA, it relies heavily on knowledge of events and character developments from the previous novels and novellas. As such, it is best read as part of the series to get maximum enjoyment.

It’s bittersweet, but all good things must come to and end. Dragos and Pia have definitely had a very good run, becoming instant fan favourites and integral to the success of the series. They’ve been through quite a lot together, (view spoiler) and have grown and developed as a couple and individuals over the course of the stories Harrison has woven for them. I can totally understand Harrison’s feeling that it’s time to put them aside and focus on other characters, personally I think they deserve a break and a real HEA. Besides, if she’s told all their stories forcing more just to sell books won’t do the characters or the author justice and I applaud Harrison for choosing to honour her characters and stick to her guns, even though they are such a fan favourite.

The plot in this novella was good showing the couple at odds with each other and bringing them back around again to the antagonistic relationship from Dragon Bound and making their relationship stronger as a result. I enjoyed how Dragos was forced to analyse his past and address some of his attitudes to other major characters from the series and gain some more emotionally satisfying conclusions in those interactions. It was nice to catch up with some of the other characters whose POVs were the subject of other novels/novellas in the series, especially Rune and Carling. Carling’s interactions with Pia were especially poignant and underscored how far she had come emotionally since the events of Serpent's Kiss.

There wasn’t as much fun in this story, especially as Pia and Dragos are at odds or separated from each other for much of the novella and then have grave matters to discuss when reunited. However, this seemed fitting given it was their big send off and if it had been too light hearted this might have detracted from the characters they’ve become.

I really enjoyed the ending, it leaves a lot of opportunities for Harrison to develop the character of their son Liam and to follow the exploits of the Sentinels in New York and possibly baby Stinkpot - Dragos and Pia’s new baby might get his own story at some point. Hopefully Dragos and Pia will pop up as secondary characters again in the Elder Race universe, but if not it’s been great getting to know and love them. They definitely feel like old friends and Harrison did them justice. ...more

So it seems like this overall story ARC that began so long ago with the love story of two very unlikely and unique individuals has come full circle and to a satisfactory ending. Any true fans of this series knew it was coming, but the end is always bittersweet and I for one was sad to see all the change and challenges that Dragos and Pia had to overcome to finally come to their true and everlasting HEA. This story was the last novella for Dragos and Pia and revolves around the how Dragos deals with the kidnapping of his mate and the truth that has been staring him in the face more and more lately. In the end Pie and Dragos have to come to a heartbreaking but necessary decision in order to rebuild their lives and give their family—and their people—a chance for a life lived on their own terms in safety. I loved seeing Pia standing up to her enemies and for her friends in this story even as she dealt with a lot of hormonal and body changes as she prepared to give birth to her second child. While it was obvious she continues to have problems with her pregnancy she refuses to allow anything to put her life of her child in danger or to take her from the love of her life. Dragos was, of course, the pinnacle predatory alpha male and tore apart the world to find and rescue his mate, but thankfully at the same time he remained a man that Pia could love and didn’t make the innocents around him suffer for the crimes of the guilty. This story tugged at my heart while also sometimes bringing laughter, but overall if makes you really think about the challenges that these two have faced both together and apart through their short, but intense and dramatic, relationship and life together. I truly enjoyed the way the story was wrapped up nice and neatly and there were so any little glimpses of favorite characters from other previous novels that I enjoyed getting to reminisce as well. I am looking forward to perhaps a new story ARC or a spinoff that revolves around the next generation or the new group of Wyr leadership. All in all it was worth every moment of angst and fear to see Pia and Dragos fins their happiness and begin to build their new lives. If you are looking for a look into the lives of a unique and amazing couple you can’t ever go wrong with one of these stories, but I highly recommend you go back to the very beginning and read them all, otherwise the true greatness of this series will slip through your fingers like so much sand through an hourglass. Whatever comes next, I know I will be one of the first in line to give it a try, so keep the magic coming Ms. Harrison.
