After spending all of 2016 reading and thoroughly enjoying World of the Lupi from beginning through to book 12, Mind Magic, I stopped short of reading Dragon Spawn due to the overwhelming amount of cliffhanger warnings. So, I settled back and waited ... and waited ... and waited, along with many others, for the release of book 14, Dragon Blood , so that I could read the two back-to-back having already suffered the wait earlier and without having to hold on to a cliff while I did. Either way, no matter your preferred method of withholding and self-imposed wait, you find the strength knowing that what is to come, your reward for the wait, will be another amazing installment in a series you've grown to love.

This deep down knowing is what has made the actuality a bit of a disappointment. Wilks' descriptive writing style is one I've come to enjoy in this series. Yet, in this installment, it was an annoyance. Having beloved characters separated, yet again, and in another realm, yet again, added to my frustration. The latter may have been more enjoyable had I not also been struggling with the weight of the overly thorough descriptions of every little thing.

Nevertheless, my love for the series is not diminished by what I found to be a disappointing installment. Aside from those personal negatives, there were positives. We learned more about Gan and Grandmother. Toby plays a bigger part than in any other installment, and he'll surely become an even larger part of the main going forward. (view spoiler) The final chapter starts into what should be a very good installment to follow. However, the circumstances in this installment found our main characters hindered in ways that challenged them, yes, but stinted the overall plot progression, IMO. It took almost the entire book to get back to where we were left hanging in the last.

I always seem to come across an unfamiliar word within one of Wilks' novels. In this book, I could have guessed its meaning, but chose to look up 'perfidy': | ˈpərfədē | noun literary | deceitfulness; untrustworthiness

Initial Thoughts:
Twelve days?! I know I’ve had less time to read this month, but twelve days to read the continuation of a major cliffhanger in a series I love? After waiting what felt like years to read them?

It was a rough read. That delightfully descriptive writing I’d come to enjoy was such a drag on this installment’s story. Not to mention shifting locations, character separations and time dilations. Makes my head hurt just thinking back on it.

Thrilled this wasn't a cliffhanger like the previous book, but concerned that this came out in 2018 and the major plotline is still unresolved.

What I enjoyed:
* This plot had a wrap up
* Most everyone survived
* Grandmother is the best

What could have been better:
* There was a ton of talking and planning and very little action. It was very easy to put the book down and difficult to pick it back up.
* The main parties were separated the majority of the book
