This is a novella told from Owen's point of view after the events at Briartop in Deadly Sting. Owen and Phillip Kincaid are having a night put when Owen overhears a plot to kill Gin. The two come up with a plan to protect her without her being aware of the danger.
Owen had still not redeemed himself completely at this point in the storyline. I read the next two books before reading this novella so I did know what was going to happen later.

The more I read about Phillip Kincaid, the more I like him :) He and Owen make a hilarious pair, and I loved this story about them kicking asses so Gin didn’t have to. Nice teaser to the new villain, and hopefully the beginning of Owen’s redemption.
It was nice to see Owen and Phillip together and for Owen to finally own up to all his sh*t, but the voice felt wrong. It seemed more like a female voice than a male point of view. One thing that especially sticks out for that was when he was describing his and Phillip's looks to himself. I understand the author wants to give us that information, but it didn't ring true to me as part of his character.

Harrumph! This is about Owen. Please read it before Book 9, Heart of Venom and after book 8.
I really hated Owen's behavior in book 7&8. What an ass! I was ready to root for a new guy, any guy for our poor Spider. But reading this book redeemed his character (a bit). Well at least we get to know what he is really thinking. ...more

It was good to read a short from Owen's POV. It was interesting to hear his side of things and to see the exact moment when he realized he was an idiot and he needed to fix things.
